It’s Bigger Than A Game

Liberty Mutual’s Coach of the Year Award celebrates college football coaches who best demonstrate the qualities of responsibility, integrity, and excellence both on and off the field. It’s not just about winning –but how you win. Four winning coaches each will receive $20,000 for their school’s alumni association and $50,000 for the charity of their choice.

The first round of fan voting is now until December 3, with finalist voting from December 7-22. Winners will be announced on January 10 during the BCS National Championship Game.

VOTE today, and continue voting daily, at www.coachoftheyear.com to show your support for the University of Iowa and Coach Ferentz!

Coffee Crawl

Students enthusiastically sampled coffees and enjoyed the sunny walk through Iowa City.

Caffeine was on the minds of UI freshmen who participated in last week’s Coffee Crawl as part of On Iowa!, a week of welcome for new students. More than 100 students walked to many of the coffee shops in Iowa City to enjoy free samples and become familiar with places to socialize and study.

In addition to the Coffee Crawl, plenty of other activities introduced new students to the UI and community. One of these great opportunities is S.T.A.T. (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow). By becoming a S.T.A.T. member, students can be involved on campus and in the community, meet other students, and develop leadership skills. Be Cool

Be coolA good part of the United States is sweltering under a protracted heat wave with no signs of cooler weather in the long-range forecast.

Friends and colleagues in Iowa City have been sharing their stories of things to do while staying cool. Many report watching old movies, playing board games with their children, and reading a good book. Others have been hosting neighborhood get-togethers or heading to the pool.

The Sixties at Iowa

Don’t fret if you missed the Old Capitol Museum exhibit on “Chaos and Creation on the Pentacrest.” Although the display ended this past Sunday, we plan to work with museum staff to highlight the history of the University of Iowa during the turbulent ’60s and ’70s for Iowa Alumni Magazine. The August feature will cover the Vietnam protests and civil rights movement on campus, as well as give you a peek into what a UI dorm room looked like at the time.

To see what’s happening now at the Old Capitol Museum, visit the website at www.uiowa.edu/~oldcap.
